Why We Built Toy Souk — The Story Behind UAE’s First Dedicated Toy Marketplace

Toy Souk is UAE’s first dedicated AI-enabled toy marketplace, built to solve a problem that hundreds of UAE parents told us was driving them crazy: buying the perfect birthday gift for a child, without the stress, without the guesswork, and without taking your own kids to the toy store and ending up buying two toys instead of one.

The Problem We Set Out to Solve

In the UAE, birthday parties are a way of life. The average child in the UAE attends two birthday parties every single month. With a young, multicultural population and most families having two or more children, that’s a lot of birthday gifts to buy — and most working parents are doing it under pressure, with limited time and a strict budget.

We spoke to over 300 UAE parents before building Toy Souk. Every single one of them said the same thing: buying a birthday gift for their child’s friend is a nightmare.

Not because they don’t care — but because the challenge is genuinely hard. You need to find something that:

  • Fits a budget that won’t embarrass you
  • Doesn’t look cheap or tacky

Our Story

Toy Souk was founded by Salman Yousuf, a UAE parent who lived this problem firsthand.

After speaking to over 300 parents across the UAE — all of whom described birthday gift buying as stressful, time-consuming and anxiety-inducing — Salman decided to build a better solution. Not a generic online shop. Not another marketplace that sells everything from fridges to footballs. A dedicated toy marketplace, built specifically around the way UAE families actually shop for toys and gifts.

That’s why Toy Souk exists. And that’s why we built Buddy the Bear.

Buddy the Bear started as a feature — an AI toy advisor that would help parents find the perfect gift. But it was Salman’s youngest daughter, Mishal, who gave Buddy his personality and his name. The inspiration? Her elder sister Manal — who the family have always called “Buddy” at home. So when Toy Souk needed a name for its friendly AI advisor, Mishal knew exactly what to call him. While the technology behind Buddy is sophisticated, his heart belongs to two sisters who just wanted to help other kids get the right gift.
